Gustave Léon Joseph, ° 3.4.1856; + 2.5.1929. Lawyer and passionate amateur historian. From 1903 to 1914, Ruhl undertook an extensive and meticulous photographic survey of the architectural heritage of Liège and its province, including churches and their furnishings as well as private dwellings. He wrote up his research in five manuscript notebooks, "Inventaire de Monuments...", illustrated with some of his own photographic prints, and which transmit a committed vision of local cultural heritage and its preservation. Views of his ancestral home town of Cologne [D], 1905. Corresponding member of the "Commission royale des Monuments et des Sites" from 1904; full member from 1912. Ruhl's manuscript inventories and collection of around 2000 negatives are preserved at the University of Liège.
