Predecessor & Successor: Becker Henri [1/2]
Richard Paul, ° 20.5.1874. Arrived in Belgium on 15.3.1901 coming from Düsseldorf [D] and again on 2.4.1902 coming from Crefeld [D]. Married in Ghent on 19.4.1904 when he had most probably been an operator with Henri Becker [1/2] since 1901. Standard printed Henri Becker CV at this address ink-stamped "Paul Rupf successor", no doubt in 1904. This must be an unsuccessful transfer attempt that was rapidly dropped. Thereafter, according to subsequent declarations in the foreigners register, Rupf moved to Turnhout from Ghent, Rue du Nord, 19 in July 1904, before arriving in Antwerp on 27.2.1905. Rupf registered as a photographer residing at Courte Rue de l'Évêque, 9 and remained in Antwerp before moving back to Ghent in 1907.
1907 Gand, Rue du Spiegelhof, 25 [Spiegelhofstraat]
Listed here as a photographer in 1907. Subsequently listed at no. 29 as a trade representative in 1908-1909. Rupf returned to Antwerp in July 1910. Rupf is representative of the legion of studio operatives and laboratory assistants, many of them of German origin, who were employed, often precariously, in Belgian studios in the two decades before World War I.
