Activity

1876 - 1880 / Bruxelles, Montagne de la Cour, 58
Predecessor: Van Gogh Hendrik Vincent
Printseller. The proprietor was Tobie "Victor" Schmidt (° Rothenkirchen [Saxony, D], 12.8.1842; + Brussels - Saint-Gilles, 22.2.1903). He had previously been an employee of Van Gogh’s since July 1872 at the latest and appears to have acquired the business by 1876, well before the latter’s death in November 1877. However, the firm continued to trade under Van Gogh’s name at this address until at least August 1879.
1880 * - 1885 Bruxelles, Marché aux Herbes, 89
Announced removal to this address in September 1880 (Journal de Bruxelles, 24.9.1880). Advertising here as "Maison Goupil" for paintings, watercolours, engravings and photographs in September 1883 (L'Indépendance Belge, 20.9.1883).
1887 - 1892 / Bruxelles, Rue de la Madeleine, 52
Still advertising as the successor to Maison Goupil. "Maison Schmidt is liquidating, at advantageous prices, its extensive stock of fine prints, photographs, watercolours, etc." (Le Soir, 25.12.1891). Schmidt was recorded in the 1890 population register initially as a printseller at this address, then as a clerk and finally a commercial traveller. He moved out on 28.6.1892.
