Ignaz Franz, ° 6.3.1834; + 22.1.1888. Also mistranscribed "Schreker, L." and "Schreken" in the directory. Originally a drawing master, Schrecker opened a photography studio in Pest (= Budapest, HU) in 1862 which grew into one of the most prominent in the Hungarian capital. He transferred the studio to his son Maximilian (° 1857) in 1876 and, freshly christianised and remarried, undertook a professional odyssey across Europe, beginning in Belgium. "Mr Schrecker, the Hungarian photographer, has been summoned to the Palace to take H.M. The Queen's photographic portrait" (Echo du Parlement, 9.11.1876). Another report refers to Schrecker as "photographer to the Court" (Indépendance Belge, 11.11.1876), a title which may have been conferred on him in Brussels as it was subsequently incorporated, together with the Belgian coat of arms, onto his card mounts.
1877 Bruxelles, Rue d'Assaut, 5
Successor: Van Peene Oscar
A son was born at this address on 22.1.1877. Schrecker also operated in Spa, presumably during the summer season. Although this studio address remained listed in directories until 1880, Schrecker left Belgium for Monaco by 1878 where another son, the future opera composer Franz Schreker [sic], was born on 23.3.1878.
