Life dates
Osthausen [D], c. 1828 - Hantes Wihéries (Erquelinnes), 1899
Activity
1883 - 1899 + Hantes Wihéries
+ 26.9.1899, aged 71. Also spelled "Schüffler". Schuffler had over twenty years experience as an itinerant photographer, latterly in Belgium, by the time he decided to use the village of Hantes Wihéries in the Hainaut region as his base. He was a travelling ambrotypist offering "portraits on canvas, on glass, on paper / coming from Paris" in 1860. Subsequent CVs, two dating from c. 1866 and 1879, bear an ink stamp "Aug. Schüffler, Photographe" with no indication of place.
An administrative communication offers a rare insight into the lot of the ambulant photographer. Writing in 1884, the burgomaster of Hantes addressed a query to his opposite number in Laneffe, where Schuffler was thought to have lived previously. "This individual has been working for over a year in the vicinity of Mons (Cuesmes, I believe) and only re-appears in Hantes Wihéries once a week. He occupies a small house in which his furniture and photographic cameras are found." Schuffler was still recorded as a photographer at the time of his death.
