° 18.1.1847; + 26.3.1929. Younger brother of Charles Smitz (- Van Acker). Pupil of Polydore Lippens (see that name). Initially apprentice to his brother in the latter’s portrait studio. Opened a studio on his own account in April 1871. Married Gudula Maria Mauritia Verheugen (° Eecloo, 16.9.1854; + Eecloo, 2.10.1902) on 24.4.1876. Artist and draughtsman. On CV, "Henri Smitz", initially no street address and then at no. 2. "Pencil portraits from photographs", c. 1900. Henri remained active until 1920. Addition "& Fils", 1900. This was his younger son Aimé (° Eecloo, 7.11.1879; + Eecloo, 12.9.1967) who took over the studio in 1902 and remained active until 1954. Studio Smitz still operates in Eecloo as a family business in the fourth generation.
