Ernest Gaston Joseph, ° 16.4.1838; + 22.5.1922. Chemist, industrialist and sociologist. Senator from 1893 until 1900. He industrialised the manufacture of soda (process patented in 1861) and established the basis of the Solvay industrial empire. As a champion of scientific research and social progress, Solvay created the Solvay Institutes of physiology, commerce and sociology at the "Université Libre de Bruxelles". In a physics council in 1911 he brought together the greatest names in this field, including Marie Curie, Einstein, De Broglie, Langevin, Max Planck and Rutherford.
Solvay's photographic activities have not yet been documented but he seems to have taken photographs during cross-country mountain hikes. May also have marketed dry plates in 1903, according to Roosens & Hens, p. 236. Solvay's elder daughter Jeanne was also a member of the ABP: see entry for Jeanne Van Parys - Solvay.
