Pierre Paul, ° 17.02.1794; + 15.02.1872. Daguerreotypist and first resident photographer in Ypres. Professor of drawing at the Academy of Ypres since 1822. First recorded photograph was an outdoor view of a procession in front of the town hall (Le Propagateur, 3.7.1844). "On metal, glass, canvas or paper. Portraits from life and after death, as well as groups of as many persons as desired. [Taken] in a few seconds, whether in the shade or indoors, in rainy as in sunny weather. Copies of photographic prints on metal, transferred to paper and enlarged to double or even triple the size; ditto for brooches, bracelets and ivory, etc. etc." (Le Progrès, 10.5.1856).
In his "Album photographique de l'artiste et de l'amateur", 1851-1853, Louis-Désiré Blanquart-Evrard published a reproduction of "Une scène d'intérieur. Contemporary Flemish painting by M.B. Deloose, belonging to M. Spootben [sic], in Ypres", perhaps from a negative by Spotbeen. In "L'art contemporain. Architecture. Peinture. Sculpture", 1854, Blanquart-Evrard published two plates: "La lecture de l'almanach", a painting by Henri Decoesne, and "La rencontre imprévue", a painting by Charles Carton. Both prints bear the credit "Spootben, phot." His son Pierre Paul Spotbeen jr. (° Ypres, 5.9.1822; + Ypres, 25.9.1872) acted as his assistant. After his father's death, Pierre Paul junior was reported in a local newspaper as stating that he would resume his father's occupation but he died only months later.
