° 2.3.1877. According to his foreigner's file in Antwerp, Taylor was a former sailor and had arrived in Belgium in May 1904. The Brussels population register on the other hand indicates that he had arrived there from the United States on 29.3.1905. First recorded as a photographer's apprentice and then as a journeyman photographer, Taylor moved back and forth to several different addresses in Brussels, always returning to Rue du Singe, 6 (in 1905, 1906 and 1908). He moved to Antwerp on 11.3.1907 where he was recorded as a photographer at Rue Van Aerdt, 25. Taylor moved back to Brussels on 17.8.1907 and after short passages in Evere and Liège in 1908 ended up moving to Brussels - Schaerbeek on 10.6.1909. His real photo postcards in Charleroi are credited "Le Nègre Américain - James Taylor - Photographe", suggesting that he might have been an African American. Advertised photography lessons at no. 24 in May and June 1914 (Gazette de Charleroi, 31.5.1914). "Rue de la Broucheterre, 24" on one postcard.
