Successor: Thiel Auguste
° 5.12.1838. Younger brother of Charles Thiel (Aîné). On the occasion of his wedding in Paris [F] on 4.5.1865, "Emile Ovilte" Thiel was recorded as a photographer living in Paris, Rue de la Victoire, 46. Charles, acting as witness, was recorded at the same address [= Thiel Frères]. Not be confused with a third brother Emile Dominique (° Aubange, 2.1.1844). A certain Emile Thiel, photographer operating in Paris, Avenue Parmentier, was arrested for "the rape of a twelve-year old girl who had come to his studio" (Le XIXe Siècle, 25.12.1876). Another brother, Etienne Charles (° Nothomb, 26.12.1852). operated as E. Thiel (Jeune) / "Photographie Parisienne" in Reims [Marne, F], Rue Buirette, 18, 1882 ca until at least 1898. Etienne was living in Paris, Rue Peray, 15 when he married there on 1.9.1881 and was still recorded as a photographer living in Reims, Rue Buirette, 18 when he married again in Roucy [Aisne, F] in September 1898.
Even though Emile Ovide Thiel's son Auguste appears to have run the studio at no. 52 from 1909, "E." for Emile was listed at no. 66-68 in the 1912-1914 directories. We have however never encountered photographs signed E. or E.O. Thiel at the latter address.
