° 17.1.1878; + 16.8.1933. First arrived in Congo in August 1899 as a representative of the "Crédit Commercial Congolais" and returned to Europe in March 1901. In 1902, he travelled back to the Congo as assistant to the "Comité Spécial du Katanga", for which he surveyed numerous routes west of the Tanganyika and south of the Lukuga. He completed his second term in the spring of 1904 as postmaster in Kiambi (Katanga). His account of his trip from "Banana to Kweto" was published in the "Bulletin de la Société d'Etudes Coloniales" in the course of 1904, along with some of Van Cauteren's own photographs.
