° 1.10.1827; + 13.1.1907. Name also transcribed Izak, Isaac or Jaak. Initially a butcher, he then operated as a daguerreotypist and photographer on paper in Rotterdam [NL], before arriving in Antwerp on 20.10.1861. According to A. Verbeeck-Hendrickx, the successor of Van Crewel Jeune, the studio was founded in 1860 (probably by Izaak). At Falconrui, 2, from 7.11.1861 until 5.9.1863, when he moved to Rue Haute, 12, probably two private addresses. Around 1865, he had a short-lived partnership with J.H. Garlinck (see that name), Longue Rue Porte aux Vaches, 21.
1865 - 1873 / Anvers, Rue du Chaperon, 6 [Huikstraat]
Arrived at this address on 27.3.1865. Sometimes written "Vangrewel". On CV, "studio in the garden". Patent of 15.5.1869 for "a photographic copying system". This was a system for making photographic postage stamps. 25 could be printed on a single sheet, perforated for use, at a cost of 6 fr. per hundred. "Mr Van Grewel [sic] has been commissioned by the board of the "Compagnie des Docks et Entrepôts" to photograph the installation ceremony for the hydraulic machines" (De Koophandel, 7.4.1869). He visited Eindhoven [NL] as a travelling photographer in August 1872, describing himself as "patented by H.M. Leopold II, King of the Belgians".

Sometimes only the initials are given: "I.V.C." and "Rue Porte aux Vaches". He visited Tilburg [NL] as a travelling photographer in 1873, stating that he would operate Sundays and Mondays beginning on 19.10.1873 in the studio of Edouard Fremau (° Brussels, 13.10.1836; + Tilburg [NL], 13.1.1892).
