Pierre Joseph Gerard, ° 16.5.1862. Arrived in Courtrai coming from Ghent on 15.10.1891. He was a retoucher at August Ruys - Morel's studio (see that name) for over a year and registered at two private addresses before moving to this address in late March 1893. Advertising here in April 1893, when he stated that he employed Nicolas Robert (see that name), who was also a former employee of Ruys - Morel. "International enlarging studio. Same firm in Amsterdam" ( L'Echo de Courtrai, 9.11.1893). In this same long advertisement, van den Hummel justified his charging lower prices than competitors by arguing: "I can offer this reduction because, as a retouching artist, I have no need to pay for an employee in this branch, for it is retouchers that are the best paid employees in photography". Left Courtrai in late 1893 for Brussels - Schaerbeek, Rue Verte and was removed from the population register in April 1894.
