Clément Chrétien, ° 14.10.1875; + 22.10.1914. Embarked for the Congo on 4.7.1900 as a lieutenant in the "Force publique". Member of the cartographic mission for the joint Commission, initially led by Julien Bastien [qv], aimed at determining the Congolese border with German-occupied territory, until May 1903. One of his photographs from this mission was published in the periodical "La Belgique Coloniale" in August 1903 (La Belgique Coloniale, 16.8.1903). von Stockhausen's photograph album of the cartographic mission, also containing prints captioned and signed by Bastien, came up for sale in 2023 (Arenberg Auctions, Brussels, 16.12.2023, lot no. 965). Appointed captain-commander in 1913. Knight of the Order of Leopold. Died "in defence of homes and the honour of the Belgian people".
