Declared bankrupt in 1856, he must have moved to Belgium soon afterwards since he was recorded as a photographer in the foreigners register in 1857 (no location specified). Took some topographical views of Malines. Van Nieuwland was still in Malines in May 1866 when he registered the death of an infant daughter.
